Backing System 1: Felt & Cotton — The Floor-Safe Choice
Felt & Cotton backing consists of a needle-punched felt pad bonded to a woven cotton underside. The cotton contact layer is inherently non-abrasive — it contains no silicone, rubber, or chemical grip agents that could interact with floor coatings or finishes.
This backing is the preferred specification for:
- Solid hardwood floors (oak, walnut, maple) where any abrasive contact risks surface scratching
- Engineered wood with UV-lacquered finishes sensitive to chemical transfer
- Heated (underfloor heating) floors where rubber backings can leave thermal transfer marks
- Premium interior design projects where floor surface preservation is contractually required
Limitation: Grip on smooth tile and polished stone is moderate. On highly polished tile, a rug with Felt & Cotton backing may require an additional separate underlay for adequate slip resistance in high-traffic zones.
Specification note: Specify felt weight (typically 280–450 g/m²) and cotton weave density. Higher felt weight increases cushioning and noise reduction; it also adds shipping weight.
Backing System 2: Felt & Silicone Dot — The Global Standard
Felt & Silicone Dot combines the cushioning and breathability of needle-punched felt with a high-density pattern of silicone dots applied to the contact surface. The silicone dots create mechanical grip through point-contact friction — no adhesive, no chemical bond — making them effective on tile, stone, laminate, and most hard-surface floors.
This is the most widely specified backing globally, balancing cost, performance, and regulatory compliance (no restricted rubber compounds). The silicone dot compound is stable across a wide temperature range (approximately −40°C to +150°C) and does not yellow or degrade under typical indoor conditions.

Backing System 3: Washable Composite — The Maintenance-First Choice
Washable composite backing uses an eco-friendly, aging-resistant polymer compound formulated to withstand domestic machine-washing cycles without peeling, cracking, or deforming. Standard certification tests require the backing to survive 30 machine-wash cycles at 40°C without delamination, dimensional change above 3%, or grip performance loss above 20%.
This backing is the correct specification for rugs marketed as machine-washable — a growing category driven by consumer preference for low-maintenance textile products. It is not a premium grip system: the primary function is washability, not maximum slip resistance.
Specification Requirements for Washable Claims
- Backing compound: water-based eco-polymer (not solvent-based)
- Wash durability: minimum 30 cycles at 40°C without delamination
- Dimensional change after washing: maximum ±3% in length and width
- Face fabric compatibility: confirm the face material also tolerates machine washing (Sherpa: yes; deep-pile Rabbit Fur: typically not recommended)
Marketing compliance note: "Machine washable" claims on product listings are scrutinized by EU consumer protection authorities. Ensure the wash durability test is conducted by an accredited third-party laboratory (not self-certified by the manufacturer) before making this claim in any EU market.
Backing System 4: TPR — Maximum Grip for Demanding Environments
TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) backing is a single-material, one-piece molded layer with no bonded components that can delaminate. The rubber compound provides physical grip through high surface friction and, in some formulations, slight suction against smooth floor surfaces.
TPR is the correct backing for:
- Wet-zone entryways where water or mud contact is frequent
- Semi-outdoor areas (covered terraces, garage entries) exposed to moisture and temperature variation
- High-traffic commercial entryways where rug migration is a safety concern

The Shipping Weight Consideration
TPR backing adds approximately 400–800g per square metre of rug weight. For a standard 2×3m (6m²) rug, this represents 2.4–4.8kg of added weight per unit — entirely in the backing. On an order of 500 units, the backing choice alone can create a 1.2–2.4 metric tonne difference in gross shipping weight. At typical sea freight rates, this represents a significant and often overlooked landed-cost variable.
