What Is Fiber Shedding, and Is It Normal?
All new plush rugs shed some fiber in the first weeks of use. This is not a defect — it is loose surface fiber that was not fully anchored during the tufting process, releasing under foot traffic and vacuuming. In a well-manufactured rug, shedding decreases to negligible levels within 2–4 weeks of regular use.
Problematic shedding is different: it continues beyond six weeks, leaves visible bare patches, or produces a dense deposit of fiber with every vacuuming session. This indicates a structural issue in how the rug was made.
The Four Root Causes of Excessive Shedding
1. Insufficient Pile Density
Pile density — how many tufts are packed into each square metre — is the single most predictive variable for shedding. A sparse pile has more free space around each tuft, allowing fibers to pull loose under lateral stress (foot traffic, vacuuming).

3. Inadequate Heat-Setting
After tufting, pile yarns are heat-set — exposed to controlled temperature and moisture — to lock the twist and bond fibers within the yarn bundle. Insufficient heat-setting temperature, duration, or steam pressure leaves fiber bonds weak and produces a rug that sheds heavily even if the stitch count and twist rate are adequate. Heat-setting is a process parameter, not a product specification — you cannot inspect it after the fact, which is why asking manufacturers for their heat-setting protocol matters.
4. Backing Bond Failure
In hand-tufted rugs, the primary backing canvas holds tufted loops in place; a secondary backing (jute, felt, or woven PP) is bonded with latex. If the latex compound is under-specified, incorrectly mixed, or applied at insufficient weight, tufts can pull partially free over time — creating a shedding pattern that worsens rather than stabilizes. This is distinct from surface fiber shedding and typically indicates a manufacturing process failure.
Color Consistency: A Linked Quality Issue
Color drift between sample approval and bulk production is the second most common complaint from rug importers, often appearing alongside shedding issues because both stem from inadequate process controls.
Color consistency is measured in Delta E (ΔE) — the numerical difference between two colors as measured by a spectrophotometer. ΔE below 1.0 is imperceptible to most observers under standard lighting. ΔE above 2.0 is visible. Precision manufacturing targets ΔE below 0.5 across all production batches.
What to specify: Require a dye-lot color standard swatch — approved by the dyehouse before tufting begins — as the binding production reference. State the target ΔE tolerance (≤ 0.5 for premium, ≤ 1.0 for standard) and request spectrophotometer readings from the production sample before bulk approval.

How to Test a Sample Before Approving Production
Request a minimum 300mm × 300mm sample. Before approving, conduct three checks:
- Rubbing test: Rub the pile firmly with a white cloth 20 times. Minimal fiber transfer indicates low shedding risk.
- Tuft pull test: Grip individual tufts between thumb and finger and pull with moderate force. In a well-bonded rug, tufts should not release. If multiple tufts pull free, the backing bond or stitch count is inadequate.
- Color match: Place the production sample directly against the approved dye-lot swatch under the same lighting. Request spectrophotometer data confirming ΔE.
