The Fundamental Difference
A manufacturer (工厂, gōngchǎng) owns and operates production equipment, employs production workers, and is legally registered as a manufacturing entity. A trading company (贸易公司, màoyì gōngsī) buys finished or semi-finished goods from manufacturers and resells them, often adding services like quality inspection, export documentation, and English-language communication.
Neither model is inherently dishonest — the problem arises when a trading company actively presents itself as a factory, uses photos of unrelated production facilities, and lacks the engineering knowledge to specify or troubleshoot the products it sells.
| Factor | Genuine Factory | Trading Company |
|---|---|---|
| Price per unit | Factory cost + profit margin | Factory cost + trader margin (10–25% typical) |
| Technical knowledge | Engineers can answer pile density, twist, heat-setting questions | Limited — often cannot provide technical specs |
| Customization capability | Direct — adjust specifications at the loom level | Indirect — must relay to anonymous factory |
| Quality dispute resolution | Direct accountability; factory has incentive to resolve | Triangular — trader blames factory; buyer is isolated |
| MOQ flexibility | Machine-run minimums (typically 200–500m² per setup) | May offer lower MOQ by mixing with other orders |
| Lead time accuracy | More accurate — controls production schedule | Less accurate — dependent on factory allocation |
| Sample matching | Samples come from same production line as bulk | Samples may come from a different factory than bulk |
How to Verify: 5 Steps That Cannot Be Faked
Step 1: Request and Read the Business License
Every legal Chinese business entity holds a Business License (营业执照). The business scope section (经营范围) states what the company is registered to do. Look for these keywords:
- Factory indicators: 制造 (manufacture), 生产 (production), 加工 (processing), 纺织品生产 (textile production)
- Trading company indicators: 销售 (sales), 贸易 (trade), 进出口 (import/export), 批发 (wholesale) — without manufacturing terms
You can verify any Chinese company's registration on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System at gsxt.samr.gov.cn using the Unified Social Credit Code (统一社会信用代码) printed on the business license.
Step 2: Verify the Registered Address Matches the Factory
The business license lists a registered address. Ask the supplier to confirm their factory address. If the factory address is different from the registered address, ask for an explanation — legitimate reasons exist (some manufacturers register in one location and operate in another), but it warrants verification. Compare the factory address provided with satellite imagery and, if possible, conduct a video call showing the factory exterior and entrance signage.
Step 3: Ask Technical Questions That Require Engineering Knowledge
This is the most efficient filter. Ask for the following information about your specific product:
- Pile stitch count per square metre for the specified construction
- Yarn twist rate in turns per centimetre for the pile fiber
- Heat-setting temperature range and duration in their production process
- Primary tufting or weaving equipment model and the number of machines dedicated to your construction type
A factory's production manager or technical team can answer these questions immediately, with specific numbers. A trading company will typically respond with vague terms ("high density," "premium quality") or will need days to relay the question to an unknown factory — and the answer they relay may not be accurate.
Diagnostic question: Ask the supplier to describe the difference between their stitch count specification for Jacquard Rabbit Fur at 25mm pile height versus 40mm pile height. A factory engineer will know this off the top of their head. A trader will not be able to answer.
Step 4: Request a Live Video Call on the Production Floor
Schedule a 15-minute live video call and ask the contact to walk through the production area. Ask them to show you:
- The tufting or weaving machines currently running your construction type
- The yarn storage area (ask about yarn denier and supplier)
- The backing application station
- The QC inspection area with a recent production run
A factory can do this immediately. A trading company will typically offer excuses (machines are busy, QC area is restricted) or will show video footage rather than a live feed.
Step 5: Check the Sample Source
When you receive a sample, ask the supplier: "Was this sample made on the same equipment and in the same facility that will produce our bulk order?" Get a written confirmation. If the bulk production is later found to deviate from the sample, this written confirmation becomes significant in dispute resolution. A factory that controls its own production will confirm without hesitation. A trader sourcing from multiple factories may deflect or qualify.
Red Flags: Likely Trading Company Behaviour
- Cannot answer pile density, yarn twist, or heat-setting questions without a multi-day delay
- Shows factory photos with inconsistent equipment or signage across images
- Offers to produce any type of rug — plush, hand-tufted, hand-knotted, woven — with equal ease
- MOQ is unusually low compared to machine-run minimums for your construction (under 50 pieces for Jacquard)
- Sample arrives faster than the stated production time would allow
- Price drops significantly when you push back — beyond normal negotiation range — suggesting margin rather than cost
- Business license registered scope contains no manufacturing terms
Where in China Are Rug Factories Located?
Jiangsu Province — Premium Plush Rugs
Changzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou. The primary center for Jacquard Rabbit Fur, Sherpa, and Printed Velvet manufacturing. Highest concentration of jacquard loom equipment and textile engineering expertise for premium residential and hospitality rugs. OEKO-TEX certification is most prevalent in this region.
Shandong Province — Hand-Tufted and Woven Rugs
Weifang, Qingdao. Known for hand-tufted wool and viscose rugs, as well as flat-woven kilim and dhurrie styles. Labor-intensive construction types that Jiangsu's machine-focused factories typically do not produce.
Guangdong Province — Machine-Made Commercial Carpets
Foshan, Guangzhou. Primarily polypropylene and nylon machine-made carpets for commercial applications — office broadloom, hospitality carpet tiles, and entry-level area rugs. Different supply chain from premium plush manufacturing.
Xinjiang / Inner Mongolia — Natural Fiber Sourcing
Not a manufacturing center but the primary domestic source for wool and cashmere fiber used by Shandong hand-tufted manufacturers. Some hand-knotted rug production exists but is smaller scale than India, Pakistan, or Morocco for natural-fiber knotted rugs.
The Hileewoo Position: Manufacturer With Textile Engineering Integration
Changzhou Liwu Textile Co., Ltd. (Hileewoo) is registered and operates as a manufacturer in Changzhou, Jiangsu province. Our business license scope includes textile manufacturing (纺织品制造). We own and operate the jacquard weaving and pile tufting equipment used for Jacquard Rabbit Fur, Jacquard Sherpa, and Printed Velvet production.
Beyond standard factory status, we operate with vertical integration into yarn procurement — 100% of our yarn is sourced directly from primary spinners, not through distributors. This gives us control over fiber specification that most rug manufacturers do not have: we can specify yarn denier, twist rate, and dye-lot standards before spinning, not after.
Verification Checklist — Use with Any Chinese Rug Supplier
- ☐Request business license — confirm manufacturing scope in 经营范围
- ☐Verify registration on gsxt.samr.gov.cn using USCC from license
- ☐Ask: pile stitch count / yarn twist rate / heat-setting parameters for your product
- ☐Schedule live video call on production floor — specific to your rug construction type
- ☐Request equipment model and count for your construction type
- ☐Confirm sample produced on same equipment and facility as bulk order (in writing)
