Sample production timelines start from artwork approval — not from the initial inquiry. If artwork revisions are needed after the first submission, each revision cycle typically adds 3–5 business days. Submit finalized, print-ready artwork at the first opportunity to avoid timeline extension.
Sample cost: Most Chinese rug manufacturers charge for custom samples (typically USD 50–200 depending on construction complexity) and deduct this cost from the first bulk order. Samples sent to the same destination address on the same day are often consolidated to reduce courier costs.
Step 4 — Colour Specification with Pantone TCX
Colour specification is where most custom rug orders encounter preventable problems. "Beige," "sand," and "warm grey" are not specifications — they are descriptions that mean something different to every observer. Pantone TCX codes are the industry standard for textile colour specification and should be used for every colour in your design.
The Pantone TCX System
Pantone TCX (Textile Colour eXchange) is the textile-specific Pantone colour system. It replaced the Pantone Cotton (PTC) system and is now the standard reference for fibre and fabric dyeing globally. Each colour has a five-digit code followed by a letter (e.g., 12-0752 TCX for a warm ivory). Provide one TCX code per colour in your design.

Step 5 — Production Sample Approval Before Bulk
A pre-production sample (PPS) is a full-size (or minimum 30×30cm) sample made on the actual production equipment using the approved materials and colour standards. It is the last checkpoint before bulk production begins. Never waive this step on a new construction or new factory — the cost of one PPS review is trivial compared to the cost of a defective bulk shipment.
What to Check on the Pre-Production Sample
- Dimensions: Measure actual vs. specified size in both warp and weft directions. Dimensional tolerance should be within ±2% or ±1cm, whichever is greater.
- Pile height: Measure in multiple locations across the sample. Variation greater than ±2mm indicates inconsistent machine settings.

- Shedding: Rubbing test — 20 firm strokes with white cloth. Minimal transfer required.
- Backing bond: Tuft pull test — individual tufts should resist moderate pull force without releasing.
- Backing slip resistance: Place on your target floor surface and apply horizontal force. Assess whether additional underlay will be needed in end use.
Written approval protocol: Issue your approval in writing (email is sufficient) listing: approved ΔE readings, dimension confirmation, specific deviations accepted or rejected. This document becomes the quality standard for the bulk inspection.
